We are currently seeking a full-time Senior Engineering Fellow to join our Policy and Ratings Department and to provide leadership across our company in building energy modeling (BEM) and building code measure development efforts. As a member of the Energy Solutions team, you will have a broad impact on state, national and international energy markets through our work for major utilities, local and state governments, and other national leaders in energy efficiency policy. The candidate selected to fill this position will bring a track record of industry leadership in BEM to collaborate with our engineers, energy modelers, data scientists, and software developers to enhance our modeling workflows. They will also work with company leadership to identify strategic opportunities to apply energy modeling and data strategies to support incentive program design and delivery as well as analysis to support building codes, appliance standards, and policy interventions. The candidate will be expected to use their BEM background and expertise to play a large role in advocating for building performance standards (BPS) regulations and stronger approaches to code compliance. The candidate will also have a track record of successful codes and standards advocacy, strategy development and stakeholder engagement, including experience with state and federal codes and standards proceedings, test procedure development, and/or model codes and reach/stretch codes. 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Develop and lead both short-term and long-term strategies to optimize energy savings, load management potential, and GHG reductions through codes and standards or other energy policy proposals  
  • Oversee the work of subject matter experts who bring deep knowledge of specific commercial and industrial technologies; steer research teams, technical analyses, and stakeholder engagement  
  • Provide strategic leadership in industry working groups and technical committees in support of voluntary or mandatory standards and test procedure updates  
  • Provide strategic leadership in designing and implementing energy modeling research projects, developing clear parametric simulation methodologies and analysis objectives 
  • Develop and implement strategy to expand use of building energy modeling to support client projects and inform strategic company growth   
  • Stay informed of innovations in energy modeling and apply knowledge to improve our company-wide BEM workflows and offerings  
  • Collaborate with BEM teams to develop and review reports and deliverables, presenting clear documentation of simulation methodologies, assumptions, results, and insights gained  
  • Develop strategic partnerships with industry stakeholders to ensure policy proposals are feasible, equitable, and have ample stakeholder support   
  • Oversee development of reports on technical topics, such as Title 24 code change proposal reports, including energy savings analyses, cost-effectiveness analyses, and market impacts analyses   
  • Develop and deliver presentations on technical topics to a variety of audiences, including clients, government agency decision makers, engineers, and other stakeholders  
  • Support staff development and management including: identifying training needs, mentoring staff, defining professional growth and development goals and opportunities for energy modelers 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Relevant undergraduate degree
  • At least 15 years of engineering or work experience / leadership in related areas of energy efficiency and decarbonization  
  • Mastery of EnergyPlus and derivative software tools that enable parametric energy modeling.  
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office (Office365, SharePoint, OneNote), Python, Amazon Web Services, GitHub, and Tableau.  
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including a demonstrated ability to facilitate effective collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams (e.g., energy modelers, software developers, non-technical program managers).   
  • Advanced knowledge of software limitations and capabilities related to technologies and design approaches used in real buildings.  
  • Demonstrated outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills including experience resolving errors in energy modeling simulations to ensure results are reasonable.   
  • Ability to work, drive, and thrive while juggling many activities and communications.  
  • Familiarity with BEM software tools including California Building Energy Code Compliance (CBECC), Integrated Environmental Solutions Virtual Environment (IES VE), EnergyPro, Design Builder, Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE, DOE-2, ResCheck, ComCheck. 
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, and demonstrated success in public speaking and providing technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences  
  • Excellent written communications skills, demonstrated ability to write reports technical papers in support of technical policy development   
  • Willingness to conduct occasional business travel.  

Compensation to commensurate with experience with the pay band of  $165,000 to $180,000/Annually
